Hurricane Season
August 11, 2009 - Durham, NC
Hurricane season is here, and pet owners should be prepared.
The
2008 hurricane season was an active one, with 16 named storms and 8 of
them hurricanes. The federal government predicts 9-14 named storms for
this season, with 4-7 hurricane and 1-3 possible major hurricanes. Pet
owners should plan now for
natural disasters to protect their pets. We only have to think of
Katrina to realize the catastrophic effect a hurricane has on our
companion animals. Don't wait until it's too late!
Every pet owner should have an escape kit and evacuation plan
in place. Owners should have on hand food and water, medications,
medical records, and all animals should wear identifying tags. Kits
for cats should include a carrier large enough to contain a litter box
and food and water bowls. Dogs should also include leashes, and
everything should be labeled with contact information.
Plan your
evacuation route in advance. Identify shelters and hotels that will
allow pets. In case you are separated from your pets at the time of
evacuation, your house should be marked with stickers to identify types
and numbers of pets, and emergency contact information should be
clearly identifiable somewhere in your home.
If you need additional resources or have questions about emergency preparedness, be sure
to contact your veterinarian for additional information.
